Scope of the Job

ARNP:  A Neonatal Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who is licensed in the State of Florida to practice professional nursing and has completed an approved Neonatal Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Program and has demonstrated expertise in the clinical management of the high-risk newborn.

PA:  A Certified Physician Assistant who is licensed in the State of Florida, and has demonstrated expertise in the clinical management of the high-risk newborn. 

Essential Functions

The essential functions are the primary dimensions for performance review.

1.

 Assessment and management of the high-risk neonate, including diagnosis and therapeutic intervention utilizing appropriate consultation and established protocol which include attending high-risk deliveries and stabilization of the ill or premature infant.  Differentiate between normal and abnormal physical findings on physical examination relevant to gestational age and interpret findings accordingly.

Provide for continuity and evaluation of health care of the newborn through cooperation and consultation with other team members.

Participates as a professional team member in identifying high-risk maternal and neonatal factors and in planning and implementation of optimal care of the newborn and his/her family.

Elicit, record and interpret complete medical histories to include relevant obstetrics, family and psychosocial medical histories.

Participate in daily patient management rounds with the Neonatologist

6.

Enter daily progress notes into the Neodata computerized program.

7.

Provide education to ancillary services and other disciplines through formal and/or informal presentations.

8.

Maintain appropriate state licensure with the State of Florida for purposes of practicing as an ARNP / PA .  Maintain ongoing education as required by licensure.

Secondary Functions

Ability to work with computer programs to produce daily notes, admission data, discharge data, access labs and other information used in the care of the high-risk infant.  Attend all mandatory educational classes offered by The University of Florida.  Attend educational activities as conducted by Neonatologists.  Cross-train in other units in the Jacksonville areas as assigned.

Temperament

Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, or unusual situations.  Must be capable of dealing with periodic cyclical workload pressures and levels of responsibility.  Required to make independent judgments without supervision.  Must be able to make generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.  Must have the adaptability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.  Requires the ability to work with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. 

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Skills

Licensed in the State of Florida

Neonatal Certifications (NRP [Neonatal Resuscitation Program]) current

Experienced in assessment and management off newborns in a Level II and Level III facility

Experienced in high-risk labor and delivery processes, intubations, resuscitation, stabilization and transporting the neonate from the L & D to the NICU.

Proficient in record keeping

Able to use  personal computer  and programs required for generating progress notes

Be a team player

Relate effectively with other staff at all professional levels

Able to travel to other NICU sites as assigned

Experience

At lease 2 years experience in a Level II and/or Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Experienced in attending high-risk deliveries. Experienced with computerized progress notes system. Some exposure to clinical trials (preferred but not essential). 

Education and Certifications

Licensed ARNP / PA in the State of Florida.  NRP Certification, PA Certification or ARNP Certification by National Certification Corporation (NCC).
